Chapter Nineteen

The days slogged by. Three, to be precise, and Sara still hadn’t found a way to forgive herself for her quickness to shoot at an unknown shadow. Accident or not, she wished more than anything that she could take it back.

She sat on the balcony of her condo, looking out at the bay. Ships with brightly colored sails floated up and down the water. A Coast Guard helicopter patrolled the sands—a comforting sound that had accompanied her beach visits for ages. There was something reassuring in it. A knowledge that there was someone always there, looking out for others. Why couldn’t she just sit here, always?

A voice came through the open balcony sliding glass door and asked if she wanted a salad.

‘I’m not feeling very hungry, but if you make one, I’ll eat a bit.’

Samuel appeared in the doorway, wearing a bright tank top, shorts, and flip-flops, his blue eyes almost glowing with intensity. She was struck again by that rich color and its contrast with his black hair. ‘The groceries I brought over—they were to make a salad. I could do eggs, too. Or a healthy shake? Açai bowl?’

She smiled. He couldn’t remotely understand the quandary she was hung up on, which was robbing her of her appetite. It was a loaded issue, not only for her own personal frustrations with how she’d reacted to the moment, but also for the honor she desired to maintain as a detective, a police officer, someone the public trusted with their safety. She didn’t want to be the sort of cop that labels like “trigger-happy”, “brutal”, or “power-hungry” could stick to.

‘Really, Samuel, you’re here because I appreciate your company. You don’t have to take care of me like that.’

‘I know I don’t have to. But I want to. Besides, I’m hungry. I’m making something for myself anyway. I’m happy to make something for you, as well.’

She was in no mood for conflict. She wanted things with Samuel to be easy, and if they weren’t, she really didn’t have the energy for it. ‘Açai bowl, then. Thank you.’

A soft grin lifted the corner of his mouth. ‘My specialty. How’d you know?’ He receded into the condo behind the dark glass.

‘Because you offered me one…’ she mumbled, but by then he was gone.

An HGTV show played on the TV inside. It had been going, keeping her company, when Samuel showed up and she hadn’t turned it off since. He didn’t seem to mind. She could hear him humming as he prepared the food. It was kind of nice to have him there. She’d called him seeking company, someone to help her find balance, and he’d obliged. Why had she done that? Because there was no one else? Anna would give her the same input she always did. Lopez had a girlfriend. Who else was there? She was almost married to her work and rarely nurtured relationships outside it. Sara had a rapport with Samuel and she now found herself relying on it.

Cal Hunt, back from the proverbial dead, was still inaccessible to Sara.
